Wonderfalls
The complete Series on DVD
Wonderfalls was a wonderful, but short-lived, television series on the Fox network.
In their infinite wisdom, Fox canceled the series after airing only four episodes.
Fortunately, all 13 episodes have been released on DVD.
Some people consider Wonderfalls to be a ripoff of the popular TV show, Joan of Arcadia, but I
couldn't disagree more. There are similarities, but there are differences.
- God, in the guise of various people, talks to Joan. Inanimate objects talk to Jaye.
(I haven't watched all the episodes yet, but I believe the objects never claim to be God.)
- Both Joan and Jaye do what they have been told, and are often surprised to see how much good comes out of
doing the little things that they do.
There are comic elements, but it is definitely a drama, so we could call it a dramedy. The show is quirky, sardonic and smart.
Some people might call Jaye a failure because she chooses not to take advantage of her degree, but instead
works in a dead-end job, but that adds to the charm of the show, especially the contrast between her
tourist-shop employment compared to the high-level success of all the other members of her family.
Some of the things that Jaye is told to do might seem outrageous, but the end-results are just amazing. You've
got to watch some of these to believe them. I highly recommend this series and I do own it, though as I write this,
I've only seen the three episodes that I saw on Fox before it was cancelled. My DVD set arrived today (as I write
this), and watching it with my mother at her house will be on the schedule for the next few weeks, one a day as
we can find the time.

If you enjoy shows like Wonderfalls, I especially recommend Touched
By an Angel and Joan of Arcadia.
