Joan of Arcadia
First Season coming soon to DVD

Did anyone else read the name on God's nametag on last night's Joan of Arcadia (25 Feb 2005). He, a grandfatherly gentleman, was attending parent-teacher night at the school where everyone had nametags. Apparently his name, for that particular incarnation, was "A. Vatar". Certainly an appropriate name for someone who has different incarnations depending on the context in which he appears each time. (One of the dictionary definitions in our dictionary was "varying incarnation").

For those of you who haven't seen it, the premise of Joan of Arcadia is that a modern teenager sees, hears from, and talks to God on a weekly basis (except when they are preempted by something else of course). He (or she) tells Joan to do something (usually the message is delivered somewhat cryptically) then something completely unexpected happens as a result. Something Joan says to a friend might end up helping her father solve an unsolved case, for example, after what was said earlier might have been relayed through other people first.

One of last night's themes was that seeing the light can be painful if you've been kept in the dark all your life. Each week has different overall themes, but also other storylines. Some themes are seasonal. A lawsuit against their family was one of the themes for the first part of this season. Now that the lawsuit has been dropped by the other side, I expect that a new theme will focus on the oldest son's regaining use of his legs bit by bit.

Some people hate the show because they don't like the new-age opinions expressed by having God actually declare himself. However, I enjoy this show from the "What If?!?!" point of view. What if God really spoke to Joan of Arc? What if he decided to do the same thing today? I do not think about this show as expressing a religious point of view, but think of it as simply a great show that helps me see that little things in my life might have been

Mom and I love the show. I normally tape it, then we watch it together either when she gets back from her Friday night Canasta group or while we have lunch on Saturday. Sometimes I watch it twice, and when it comes around in reruns, I'll see the episodes again, they're that good in my opinion.

There's good news for Joan fans. The first season will be out on DVD in May. Whether you've seen them on TV or not, I highly recommend the entire DVD series. I know we'll be purchasing every season as they are released.

Fox used to have a somewhat different show with the same premise, Wonderfalls.

In it, an out-of-college young lady works in a Niagara Falls gift shop and hears inanimate objects telling her to do things. She, Jaye, is not as sure that she's hearing from God as Joan is, but she does eventually do the things, or doesn't and sees the unforeseen consequences, and learns interesting things. In a commentary, the producer said they were trying to come up with the idea of how God might communicate with a modern day Joan of Arc. I had only seen two episodes of it while it was on TV last year, but I loved it and was disappointed when it got canceled after only four episodes. But luckily, the producers have finally released The Complete Series (13 episodes) as a DVD set.

I bought it as a gift for Mom and I to share, to go along with the Touched by an Angel (first season) ...

... that I got her last year. We finished Angel a month or so after getting it.

The other spiritually oriented DVD collection that Mom and I are sharing, spaced out over many months (ago and to come) is the Babylon 5 TV series (all five seasons and all the movies).
See: http://www.GodLovesEveryone.org/reviews/babylon5ondvd.html

B5 is a space station out where it can be visited by members of many different space-faring races and empires. There is lots of politics and the spirituality is both overt and covert. One episode might involve comparing the religions of one world to another, while another might have a small sub-plot involving searching for the holy grail, which has different names on different worlds. Of course, many episodes are mostly about the politics and very little religion, but overall, it's a great series. The executive producer actually planned the entire five year run of the program BEFORE he filmed the first episode.

I've seen all of the B5 episodes multiple times, but I love watching them again with Mom because there's so much spiritual content. In fact, on the commentary track for "Signs and Portents" (13th episode of first season), the producer commented that he got much of his inspiration from the Bible. What I really like is the fact that it tries to showcase the differences between religious points of view. What's funny is that an episode that was not one of my top favorites might end up being one of her favorites but for different reasons.

Finally, on the DVD scene, if you are looking for a wide variety of spiritual features, the DVDs that you can get every month from this spiritual DVD club are worth checking out. You can find more information here: spiritual-dvds-every-month/. I checked out one month's worth of DVDs and loved every minute. And I really appreciated the fact that they didn't try to promote just one point of view.

If you enjoy shows like Touched By an Angel and Joan of Arcadia, I especially recommend that you purchase Wonderfalls - The Complete Series, the entire 13-episode run of the Fox TV series. The show was canceled after only four episodes were aired, but thirteen were "in the can".
